Letter, 1866 Aug. 2, Lynchburg, Va., to Miss Fannie Williams.

Thanking Williams for her note of 24 July 1866 that had reached his wife, Marcella [Christianna Morriss Hammond], just before the birth of their only surviving child, a daughter named Bet. Noting that Marcella's delicate health had improved since moving west from Richmond, and referring to the graves of their three other children, "casualties attributable to the excitement of our late unhappy war ... [and] sad mementoes of our domestic bereavement."
